We were fortunate enough to find over 100 reviews for the InSinkErator Badger 5. Unfortunately, it looks like real life customers are somewhat split on their opinion Badger 5. There were a few stellar reviews, but the majority of customers gave this model lower than average scores.
While some InSinkErator garbage disposals are among the best in the industry, the InSinkErator Badger garbage disposal just doesn’t happen to be one of them. It is a very affordable disposal, so if you’re looking for a light-duty replacement and price is your only concern, then the InSinkErator Badger 5 1/2 HP Food Waste Disposer would be a smart buy. But if you’re after top performance and durability, you may want to check out some of the other InSinkErator waste disposers.
We were on a budget when our old disposer quit, so our guy installed the Badger 5. For no longer than a disposer runs, I could care less about noise, and for the most part, this disposer does the trick. BUT, if you run heavier loads (e.g., watermelon rind), you need to really cut small chunks. This motor does not seem to have the power than a 1/2HP motor should, and it seems to get ‘tired’ after a few seconds of a heavy load.
My parents replaced their old disposer in 1975 with an ISE “77″ 3/4HP disposer. For being rated only 1/4HP more than the Badger 5, it had a lot more power, and even with tough loads, would just keep on keepin’ on. They sold the house in 2002 and it was still working like a champ.
One other thing about the Badger 5–with a sink full of water, it does not pull the water down the drain like I think it ought. But this is a single-sink application, and it may be that a 2-sink setup has better ‘venting’ action than a single sink.
